Buckwheat pillows
What are buckwheat hulls?
They're the cleaned outer shells of buckwheat seeds. Inside a pillow, the hulls shift and settle around your head and neck, so the pillow holds its shape night after night, and air moves freely between them so it stays breathable. Learn more on our Why Buckwheat? page.
How firm is a buckwheat pillow?
Firmer and more structured than foam or down, though it molds to your shape as you settle in. Most people take a few nights to adjust to the feel.
Can I adjust the fill?
Yes. Unzip the cover and remove or add hulls a handful at a time until the height and firmness feel right. Our Firmness & Fill Guide has the full steps.
Do buckwheat pillows make noise?
You'll hear a soft rustle when you move, since the hulls shift against each other. Most people stop noticing it within a few nights.
Will my pillow have a smell?
Our hulls are cleaned before filling, so most customers notice little to no scent. A light, earthy smell is normal when a pillow is new and usually fades within a few days, faster if you air it out in a dry, well-ventilated spot.
Why does my pillow feel heavy?
Buckwheat hulls simply weigh more than foam or down. A full-size pillow can weigh around 9 to 11 lb; that weight is part of what keeps the fill stable and shaped.
How long do the hulls last, and when should I top them up?
Hulls are durable and settle only slowly with regular use. When your pillow starts to feel flatter than it used to, add a cup or two of fresh buckwheat hulls. There's no fixed schedule; let how the pillow feels be your guide.
Choosing a pillow
What's the difference between Cover Only and a filled pillow?
Cover Only is the empty, zippered cover with no hulls inside, for a spare, a replacement, or filling yourself with hulls bought separately. The filled version is the complete, ready-to-use pillow shown in the product photos.
Which size should I choose?
It depends on your bed, your pillowcases and how you sleep. Our Size Guide compares every size, and our Pillow Buying Guide walks through the full decision.
What if I sleep on my side, back or stomach?
Side sleepers generally want more fill and height, back sleepers a medium fill, and stomach sleepers less fill for a flatter pillow. Our Sleep Position Guide goes through each position in detail.
Are your products organic?
No. We use natural materials, including buckwheat hulls, undyed cotton and linen, but our products aren't certified organic.
Meditation cushions
What's the difference between a zafu, a crescent zafu and a zabuton?
A round zafu is a filled, round cushion that lifts your hips for cross-legged sitting. A crescent zafu curves around your hips, often preferred for kneeling. A zabuton is a flat mat that goes underneath either one to cushion your knees and ankles. See our Meditation Cushion Guide for more.
Can I adjust how firm my meditation cushion is?
Yes, our zafu and crescent zafu cushions are filled with buckwheat hulls, so you can add or remove fill the same way you would with a pillow.
Care
How do I wash a buckwheat pillow?
Empty the hulls into a bowl or bag, wash the empty cover on a cold, gentle cycle, and air dry it. Never wash the hulls themselves. Our Care Guide has the full steps for every fabric.
Can I put my cover in the dryer?
We recommend air drying instead. Heat can shrink undyed cotton and linen over time.
